Aufgaben

As an Engineer for Zooplankton Aquaculture at the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI), Bremerhaven, within the Polar Biological Oceanography section / AG Häfker, my role focuses on establishing and maintaining an experimental culture and observation system for the copepod Calanus finmarchicus. My main responsibilities include building and operating a recirculating aquaculture system for copepod culture, monitoring population dynamics, collecting mature females and eggs, supporting generational turnover, and maintaining system performance. I am also responsible for establishing and maintaining phytoplankton cultures, particularly Rhodomonas baltica and Dunaliella tertiolecta, as live feed, and for developing an incubation and video-monitoring setup in which copepod swimming behaviour can be recorded under controlled light, temperature, and oxygen cycles using infrared cameras and custom lighting. The position also involves optimizing video quality and potentially developing digital or deep-learning-based approaches for behavioural analysis, while contributing to research on biological rhythms and chronobiology in marine zooplankton.
