Helgoland Oyster Nursery

The nursery facility on Helgoland is used for the rearing and care of juvenile oysters produced in the hatchery of the Thünen Institute of Fisheries Ecology. There, European oysters are cultivated under controlled conditions, from broodstock conditioning and microalgae production through larval rearing to settlement on suitable substrates. Following this early developmental phase, the juvenile oysters are transferred to the nursery, where they are further cultivated until they are ready for deployment at restoration sites.

In the nursery, juvenile oysters are carefully maintained and acclimated to North Sea conditions while being protected from predation during their early and delicate life stages. They are held in offshore oyster baskets or mesh bags, where they continue to grow under controlled conditions until they reach a larger and more robust size suitable for deployment at restoration sites. Temporary maintenance in land-based tank systems may also be required when environmental or operational conditions necessitate it.

Within the project, the existing nursery infrastructure is being expanded and optimised. This includes the development of additional oyster baskets and mesh systems, as well as the refinement of methods for preparing oysters for outplanting in restoration areas. At the same time, sustainable procedures for the final deployment of oysters are being developed and tested.

The work is carried out in close collaboration with the Thünen Institute of Fisheries Ecology and European partners within the NORA oyster restoration network.

The project is funded by the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN) with financial support from the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection.
