Macroalgae cultivation provides a variety of ecosystem services that contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 14 (Life Below Water), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and SDG 12 (Responsible Production and Consumption). Specifically, algae cultivation provides healthy food, hydrocolloids and feed, regulates water quality, provides habitats and nursery areas and can potentially contribute to climate change mitigation. Many research projects are currently underway at AWI to better understand how algae can serve society, from onshore to offshore cultivation to biomaterials and knowledge transfer. Below you will find links to projects within our research group.
