IOP Trusted Reviewer Award 2025
Scientific reviews of manuscripts can also be rated with stars. Five stars earn you a prize, the IOP Trusted Reviewer Award. Peter Köhler received the IOP Trusted Reviewer Award in 2025 for his accurate and constructive reviews of scientific manuscripts.
Award Bachelor Thesis 2025
Theresa Schreglman (B. Eng, Geo-visualisation) prepared her Bachelor thesis in the Glaciology section. She developed a map showing the ongoing impact of global warming in the Arctic, visualising different observations. The goal was to provide both – intuitive and quantitative information and include several datasets from AWI. Theresa was awarded for her work by the Bayerische Vermessungsverwaltung (BVV).

Data Champions 2025
Accessible Science: Thanks to a team from the AWI Glaciology group it is now possible to view and access the many airborne radar lines collected in the past from our group: Link
This means that the data is also accessible to scientists from other institutes and can be used for further studies. For this, Steven Franke, Veit Helm, and Daniel Steinhage received this year's Data Champion Award 2025 from DataNord (Interdisciplinary Data Competence Center for the Bremen Region). More information about the award and the project can be found here:

Student Prize University Bremen 2024
In 2024 the student prize of the “Friends of the University of Bremen” was awarded to Dr. Nicolas Stoll. The title of his PhD Thesis is „Microstructure and impurities in polar ice“. Link
You can learn more about his work here: Glaziologie Outreach
Best student dissertation Geosciences 2024
Luca Grewe received the Unioversity of Bremen Geosciences Department's award for the best master's thesis for her thesis in glaciology. The title of the thesis is:
"Using GNSS-Reflectometry/Refractometry for Automated and Continuous Surface Mass Balance and Surface Snow Density Estimation".
Referee Award Climate of the Past 2024
Glaciologist Peter Köhler (on the left) was honored for his work as a referee for “Climate of the Past.” The Gold Award was given for reviewing over 20 manuscripts.
Helmholtz- Imaging Photo Competition 2023
Helmholtz Imaging searches each year the best scientific image, which was awarded to Timan Bucher (DLR) and Angelika Humbert (AWI) in 2023 (3rd place). The image is acquired with the MACS airborne system over Nioghalvfjedersbræ in North-East Greenland showing a supraglacial lake that has drained. The dark colors show sediments like dust at the glacier surface. The fracture through which the lake drained to the base is visible as a line-like feature.
Student Prize University of Bremen 2022
In 2022 Dr. Steven Franke was awarded the Student Prize of the Friends of the University of Bremen for his PhD thesis "Deciphering past and present ice flow patterns from radar reflections".
Richardson Medal 2022
The entire ISMIP6 team was awarded by the International Glaciological Society with the Richardson Medal for its academic and leadership activities in the design and production of future sea-level projections. The AWI ISMIP6 members are Thomas Kleiner and Angelika Humbert, who contributed with projections for the ice sheets in Antarctica and Greenland.
AGU Outstanding Reviewers 2017
Peer review of scientific manuscripts is an important process in the publication and dissemination of research results. In 2017, AWI glaciologist Peter Köhler was honored for his work in this field.
Women-MINT-Slam, Informatica feminale 2011
The Women-MINT-Slam was a part of Informatica feminale at the University of Bremen (September 7, 2011).
Like its original format, the poetry slam, the Women-MINT-Slam is a competition in original and entertaining presentation. In addition, it showcases STEM careers of women, and schoolgirls and female students experience STEM role models live and can benefit from their experiences.
Melanie Behrens from AWI glaciology took third place with her contribution “Old Air from Yesterday's Snow.”
Descartes Prize 2008
The research prize is awarded to teams of researchers who have “achieved outstanding scientific or technological results through collaborative research in any field of science, including the economic, social science and humanities.”
Communicator Prize 2007
The Communicator Award is Germany's highest distinction for the communication of research findings to the general public. It has been awarded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Foundation, DFG) and the Donors' Association for the Promotion of Sciences and Humanities in Germany since 2000 to scientists and researchers who have communicated their research findings to the general public in a particularly varied, original or creative manner and who have rendered outstanding services to the increasingly important dialogue between the scientific community and the public.
