TRANSDRIFT (The Laptev Sea System)

Project funded by the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF)

Duration: 01.03.2013 – 29.02.2017

Coordinator: Heidemarie Kassens, GEOMAR, Germany

Objectives of the TRANSDRIFT-Project are:

  • to assess the influence of sea-ice and ocean dynamics in the Laptev Sea on the transpolar drift;
  • to investigate changes in the arctic halocline, water mass formation, and transport mechanisms in the transpolar system;
  • to study ecological consequences of changes in key regions of the transpolar drift;
  • to investigate regional variations in the atmosphere - sea-ice - ocean system;
  • to study the history of the transpolar system.

BIOACID III (Biological Impacts of Ocean ACIDification)

Project funded by the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF)

Duration: 01.10.2015 - 31.12.2017

Coordinator: Ulf Riebesell, GEOMAR, Germany

The overarching questions of BIOACID-Project are:

  • What are the effects of ocean acidification on marine organisms and their habitats?
  • What are the underlying mechanisms of responses and adaptations on the level of populations and communities?
  • How are they modulated by other environmental stressors, and what are the consequences for marine ecosystems and ocean biogeochemical cycles?
