16th DACH Permafrost Conference
The 16th DACH Permafrost Conference was held from 21–24 January 2026 at the HVHS am Seddiner See near Potsdam, Germany. The conference is the central scientific meeting of the DACH Permafrost Union, a permanent working group of the German Society for Polar Research, and provides an established platform for exchange among researchers working on polar and mountain permafrost.
In total, 101 participants attended the conference, representing eight countries: Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Sweden, the Czech Republic, Belgium, France, and Finland. The meeting brought together scientists from across career stages, ranging from students and early-career researchers to senior scientists, and fostered interdisciplinary discussion and networking.
The scientific programme comprised 3 keynote lectures, 31 oral presentations, and 50 poster presentations. Contributions covered a broad range of current topics in permafrost research, including permafrost thaw and associated greenhouse gas emissions, geomorphological processes and infrastructure-related hazards, ecosystem and carbon-cycle feedbacks, as well as advances in monitoring, modelling, and observational networks. Dedicated discussion times during sessions and poster presentations enabled intensive scientific exchange.
The conference was complemented by several pre-conference and side activities, including a PermaCOST pre-conference workshop, a PYRN-DACH–organised Early Career Researcher (ECR) workshop, and a GTN-P workshop. These events provided focused forums for methodological exchange, collaboration, and capacity building, and highlighted the strong commitment of the DACH Permafrost community to international cooperation and early-career support. Selected impressions and group photos are available in the photo section.
Overall, the 16th DACH Permafrost Conference strengthened existing research networks and fostered new collaborations within the European and international permafrost research community. The Book of Abstracts is openly available and also available below.
We thank all participants and supporters for making the 16th DACH Permafrost Conference a wonderful and inspiring experience.

In addition to the exciting and permafrost-cool scientific programme, we have planned a range of social and informal activities. Here is what you can look forward to - and what you might want to prepare for:
Morning Yoga Wake-up (Thursday & Friday, 7:00 AM)
Start your day refreshed and balanced with a 45-minute yoga session led by teacher Alex. It may feel early, but it’s worth it! Please bring comfortable clothing and, if possible, a soft pad or yoga mat (a limited number of mats will be available).
Please note: Room capacity is limited to 20 participants; sessions are first come, first served.
Campfire (Thursday after dinner)
Winter Networking Hike (Friday after lunch)
Local Excursion (Saturday)
Please pack warm, weatherproof clothing and sturdy shoes suitable for cold and wet conditions. The approximately 1.5-hour hike through Brandenburg’s forests and the Saturday excursion (approx. 4.5 hours) may be wintery/muddy.
If you would like to prepare in advance for the excursion, please consult the attached PDF, in which Bernhard Diekmann, our tour guide (and AWI Potsdam Research Unit head), has compiled relevant background information. The excursion will focus on the Quaternary and ice age history of the region and will visit selected sites described in this document (not all of them).
Informal Expedition Reports (Friday after dinner)
In keeping with tradition, we will close Friday evening by sharing personal fieldwork highlights. Whether mountains, tundra, or elsewhere - please feel invited to bring a USB drive with a selection of photos for an informal photo show. Short anecdotes and stories are very welcome!
Abstract submission and registration are now open:

Accommodation and full board (meals and refreshments) at the conference venue will be included in the conference fee. Room capacities are limited, so all participants will be accommodated on-site. Prices for regular and student fees will be announced in due course, pending current funding and sponsorship arrangements.
