For tackling sustainability challenges within the Anthropocene, scientific findings are of high relevance for society. At the same time, society also shapes research priorities and objectives. These interrelations surface strongly in marine systems, which act as a central driver of Earth system dynamics and human well-being.
To address these complexities, we work with a holistic system approach that integrates multiple perspectives, knowledge systems, and disciplines. Using the social-ecological system concept as our point of departure, we go beyond conventional natural science approaches to study social systems as drivers of change. This requires understanding different languages, paradigms, and methods across science and society.
Our key focus areas are:
• Societal priorities shape research objectives – What are these priorities, and who defines them?
• Transformation is needed to achieve sustainability – What kind of change is required, and in what direction?
• Scientific literacy helps uncover possible pathways – What type of science do we need to support this process?
