Biofloc systems are becoming increasingly important as this technology is considered to be particularly sustainable and resource-efficient. The resulting particles of various microorganisms and detritus are called bioflocs and represent a previously unutilized residual material.
This biomass contains a variety of valuable nutrients such as proteins, lipids and micronutrients (fatty acids, amino acids and minerals). However, there is as yet no practical harvesting or processing method for the organic material of the biofloc, which complicates targeted further processing on an industrial scale. In addition, single-cell feed alternatives (like Biofloc) often have limitations in terms of digestibility.
The FlockoPro project aims to develop a purification and fermentation method for biofloc residues from shrimp production in order to utilize them as protein-rich and easily digestible raw feed materials.
To this end, the project will (I) develop an automated harvesting, desalination and dewatering system in order to produce an optimal starting product for further processing. In addition, (II) a subsequent fermentation process will be developed that is adapted to the residual material and should contribute to the reduction of poorly digestible components as well as to a stable, reproducible nutrient profile. (III) In addition, feed containing the optimized Biofloc will be formulated and produced for two relevant aquaculture species and compared with conventional feed in feed trials.
Internships and final theses can be carried out in this project.
