AWI photographic works are exhibited in Italy
Everydayclimatechange: In the photo exhibition, from the 5.7 to 18.8, four AWI photos will be shown in Orbetello, Italy. The work documents the AWI climate research in the polar regions.
The Scent of the Ocean
Over the past few days, one could smell a scent of ocean, again. It is also interesting that as one get closer to the European shelf on board a ship, one notices that the water is no longer has the hue of the deep ocean blue or the shimmering turquoise of tropical waters. The waters are less clear and they have the same gleam as dark green glass.

Young people share what they have learned with the world
This coming Saturday, 29 June 2019, 33 young scientists from around the globe will be celebrating their graduation at the Alfred Wegener Institute. Ten scholarship holders have come to the end of a 10-month programme, and 23 young people have completed an exciting month-long expedition.

Antarctic season ends this weekend
After half a year in the Southern Hemisphere, the research icebreaker Polarstern will soon return to her homeport, Bremerhaven. Following a season of work focusing on sea ice, the icebreaker will now be prepared for her next challenge: the greatest Arctic research expedition of all time, which will begin this September.

AWI receives audit berufundfamilie for the fifth time
Arranging work and family life is a high priority at all locations of the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research. This is also proven by the repeated awarding of the berufundfamilie Service GmbH audit certificate, which has now been presented for the fifth time in a row to Winfried Hebold-Heitz and Ines Foellscher from the family office.

Working in the Ocean
It is Sunday today on the POLARSTERN. I was delighted with the crispy croissant and apricot jam, which I consumed for breakfast with a delicious cup of creamy coffee, this morning. Our research doesn´t stop on Sundays. Ship time for ocean research is too precious.

Polarstern, 07°0´N, 23°48´W
On Friday the 14.06 we arrived at the equator. We stayed put there for a while to measure the different over depth. If one stood on the portside of the ship one was in the southern Hemisphere and standing on the starboard side, one was in the northern Hemisphere. The meteorologists could wander between both, outside their office.

‘Astro-Alex’ visits the AWI
Fascinating insights and a friendly exchange: Geophysicist and astronaut Alexander Gerst recently paid a visit to his alma mater, the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI). Before an audience of ca. 200 members of staff, he gave an in-house talk on his work as ‘astro-Alex’ and exchanged ideas with the researchers in attendance.

German President and AWI Director visit Iceland
Together with a group of climate experts, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier visited Iceland from 12 to 14 June. Prof Antje Boetius, Director of the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI), accompanied the President at his request, in order to discuss global climate change and Germany’s contribution to climate protection.

Polarstern in Port Stanley
The PS120 Transit on RV „Polarstern“between Port Stanley and Bremerhaven is a research- and training expedition. Twenty-three young scholars, who were chosen from 800 applicants, are taking part in the SoNoAT 2019 „Changing Oceans Changing Future“ programme. This is set upon RV „Polarstern“ as a collaboration of POGO (Partnership for Observations in the Global Oceans), NIPPON FOUNDATION and AtlantOS.
