Stars of Polar Night with Esther Horvath

With the exhibition “Stars of Polar Night”, internationally acclaimed AWI photographer Esther Horvath brings the fascinating world of Arctic research to Arendalsuka. The exhibition offers insights into life and work at the research station in Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard. Through striking photographs, Horvath portrays scientists and staff members who work under extreme conditions to investigate the impacts of climate change in the Arctic.

It focuses on the German-French research station AWIPEV, jointly operated by the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI) and the French Polar Institute Paul-Émile Victor (IPEV). In addition, the photographs document daily research activities at the Norwegian Polar Institute, Kings Bay, and other scientific institutions in Ny-Ålesund.

Esther Horvath will also offer guided tours of the exhibition in English on three occasions:

- Monday, 10 August, 13:30–14:00
- Tuesday, 11 August, 11:00–11:30
- Wednesday, 12 August, 17:15–17:45

Climate Talk
A panel discussion entitled “Can a Photograph Do What a Policy Paper Cannot?” will take place on 10 August from 12:00 to 13:00 at Vitensenteret Sørlandet in Arendal. The discussion will explore the role of photography in science and climate communication.

The event is organised in cooperation with the French and German Embassies in Oslo, the Alfred Wegener Institute, the Goethe-Institut, the Institut français de Norvège, the Willy Brandt Foundation, and the Bellona Foundation.
