Explore Science Bremen

From 10 to 12 September 2026, the “Explore Science” festival, organised by the Klaus Tschira Foundation, will take place for the eighth time in Bremen. Explore Science aims to spark young people’s interest in scientific topics and to promote collaboration between scientific institutions and schools.
This year, local partner organisations from the fields of research, education and science, as well as partner schools, are offering numerous hands-on activities, experiments, workshops, stage shows and competitions on the theme of “Inventions & Discoveries”.

The Alfred Wegener Institute will be presenting the following topic:

Setting off for the Poles – The new research vessel

Anyone wishing to understand the climate of the future must analyse current changes, be familiar with the planet’s climate history and be able to distinguish short-term fluctuations from long-term trends.

Researchers at the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) operate a large number of observatories that collect measurement data over long periods. They study the atmosphere, ice, oceans and coastlines, and analyse climate archives such as marine sediments and ice cores. And to carry out this research, high-performance instruments and tools are required.

The AWI is showcasing innovations in polar research and providing updates on the current status of the new Polarstern vessel. From ice core drills used to extract ice cores, to underwater robots optimised for sub-zero temperatures, right through to the research vessel itself, inventions are essential for making discoveries.
