Heading North into Icy Worlds – Life, Everyday Routine, and Research on Polar Expeditions

Dr. Jennifer Dannheim is a deep-sea ecologist whose research focuses on the impacts of climate change on benthic organisms in the Arctic deep sea – an ecosystem that is still little explored and particularly sensitive. In 2025, she led an expedition aboard the research icebreaker Polarstern to the Fram Strait, the stretch of ocean between Svalbard and Greenland.

In her talk at the Kreisbibliothek Brake, she reports on conducting scientific research under extreme conditions, on everyday life aboard the ship, and on fascinating discoveries on a small scale. At the same time, she conveys the fascination of an icy, unique, and awe-inspiring world and shows why the Arctic plays a key role in understanding global climate change.
