Background and Motivation

There are several theories about what we consider as beautiful - the best known example is the artificially composed, average, regular face made up of the features of 100 different real faces. However, the assessment of human features by humans is a special case - here sexual attractiveness and health are clearly important factors in the assessment. For more abstract features such as patterns and 3D structures, other rules seem to different rules apply: Complexity, symmetry, fractals, repetition, but also slight deviations from strict regularity are features that are described as attractive.

Objective

In Light Beauty we use structures from nature that are purely functional, highly effective lightweight solutions and certainly do not aim at any aesthetic effect (as for the purpose of mate selection). Nevertheless, they are generally perceived as very aesthetic. Thus, we have a pool of attractive and functional structures at our disposal that can be usefully employed for product development. The above survey helps us to consider the design principles that are particularly attractive, while at the same time ensuring technical performance via an AI tool.
