Helmholtz Association promotes business start-ups

Outsourcing of Helgoland lobster breeding is one of four selected projects
[13. January 2016]

The Biological Institute Helgoland of the Alfred Wegner Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) has been breeding lobsters for years and has developed a special hatchery system. The animals and their habitats have been extensively investigated.

As part of the "Helmholtz Enterprise" funding the lobster breeding will now be commercialized. The aim is to breed the animals for different purposes, e. g. for increasing the population around Helgoland or for supplying aquaculture companies with juvenile lobsters. A recovered population would allow sustainable fishing.

Local residents and tourists show great interest in the guided tours of the lobster hatchery. Thus, the visit to the facilities is another attractive offer to the guests of the island.
