Photo festival on the Baltic

Antje Boetius is the patron of the 2019 photo festival »horizonte zingst«

Environmental photo festival displays AWI imagery in an outdoor exhibition
[24. May 2019]

As a deep-sea researcher and Director of the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research, Antje Boetius has explored oceans around the globe. This year, for the first time she is also supporting the environmental photo festival »horizonte zingst«. In her role as festival patron, she hopes the gripping images will help raise awareness for environmental concerns

“I’m delighted to be the patron of the festival in 2019,” says the AWI Director. “For me, getting a broad audience excited about nature is an important concern. As such, I didn’t have to think twice when they invited me, especially because photography offers an outstanding vehicle. I personally find myself amazed by the teeming life in our oceans, time and time again. I’m grateful to be here at this lovely venue, and for the opportunity to share photographs of nature in all its facets with countless people through the festival.”

In addition, the AWI will contribute exhibitions and presentations to the festival agenda: Esther Horvath accompanies much of the AWI’s fieldwork as a photographer. In the series“Behind Arctic Science”, which will be shown in an open-air exhibition in front of the Max Hünten House, she shares a selection of photographs that document what the researchers actually do, as well as day-to-day life in the polar regions. The exhibition will be on display until 1 March 2020. On 25 May 2019, from 8 pm, Esther Horvath will also present her work in the form of a multivision show in the multimedia hall. Afterwards, AWI expert Thomas Krumpen will give a talk on sea ice.

The 12thenvironmental photo festival »horizonte zingst« will kick off with an opening week from 25 May to 2 June 2019. This year, for the first time, the festival in the Baltic spa city Zingst has been extended to 30 June 2019. Further, its mission is clearly defined: with the aid of emotionally moving images, photography will help to convey important information, encourage viewers to rethink their attitudes and habits, and ultimately contribute one small step toward changing the world.
