International Vista Seminar 2021

Hosted by the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, the International Vista Seminar 2021 will take place on November 17 under the title "Subsea floor processes and a sustainable ocean". There, AWI Director Antje Boetius will give a lecture at 3:00 p.m. on the topic "Hydrothermal vents and deep sea mining - are we interfering with the “origins of life”?". Viscous AND elastic: Glaciers are more “solid” than previously assumed

Melting glaciers are a major contributor to global sea-level rise. In order to project the latter as precisely as possible, all relevant processes at work in the world’s large glaciers must be simulated as realistically as possible in computer models. In most simulations, the ice is exclusively depicted as a flowing body. But, as a new modelling study led by the Alfred Wegener Institute confirms, this approach neglects the ice’s qualities as a solid body. Olivier Poivre d'Arvor, French Special Envoy for Polar Regions and Maritime Affairs, visited the Alfred Wegener Institute in Bremerhaven for a joint exchange. Topics were amongst others the German-French Arctic research base AWIPEV in Ny Ålesund as well as EU cooperations and current research projects.

The Bremen Senate bids farewell to Angela Merkel

With a visit to the German Emigration Center Bremerhaven (DAH), Chancellor Angela Merkel said goodbye to the state of Bremen and the Bremen Senate on November 4. After signing the Golden Book of Bremerhaven and a guided tour of the Emigration Center, she met with representatives of the political and scientific life in Bremerhaven and Bremen, including AWI Director Antje Boetius.

Antarctic and Southern Ocean ecosystems are under increasing pressure from global climate change and direct human impacts. Decisive, immediate action on climate change mitigation is required at the global scale, as well as effective management at the local scale, to protect these ecosystems and their societal benefits worldwide.
