Public guided tour for the Day of Archives and International Women’s Day

When: 7/8 March 2026, at 11:00 and 15:00
Where: Wegener Building, Am Alten Hafen 26, 27568 Bremerhaven
Who: Dr Christian Salewski, Archive for German Polar Research (AdP)

To mark the 109th International Women’s Day and the 13th “Day of Archives”, Dr Christian Salewski, archivist at the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI), will offer a public guided tour on 7 and 8 March through the lecture hall of the Wegener Building and the repository of the Institute’s archive, the Archive for German Polar Research (AdP).

The focus of the tour is the newly redesigned Gallery of Honour in the lecture hall. The project recognises female and male polar researchers in equal measure and thus reflects this year’s International Women’s Day motto, “Everyone for Equal Rights”.

Under the Day of Archives motto “Old Home – New Home”, the tour will also provide insight into the work of the AdP. The archive not only preserves historical documents but also opens up new perspectives on the history of polar and marine research – for example through its collaboration with the Berlin-based artist Gesine Born, who created the 36 large-format portraits using AI. Participants will be guided through the AdP repository, gaining an impression of the preparatory work for the gallery project and of the archive’s responsibilities, including its role as the historical memory of the AWI and of German polar and marine research.

The public guided tours will take place on both 7 and 8 March at 11.00 and 15.00 in the Wegener Building.

Advance registration is required by Friday, 6 March at 13.00 via: archive@awi.de
