A very warm welcome to the Alfred Wegener Institute! We are delighted to have you join our team at one of our five locations. It’s great to have you with us!
The AWI was founded in 1980 in Bremerhaven with just a handful of staff. Today, we employ more than 1,400 people. As a Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research, our work focuses on the cold and temperate regions of the world – from the polar areas to the coastal waters of the North Sea. With excellent ideas and outstanding research results, our scientists provide vital insights into the complex processes of the Earth system.
We see ourselves as a community of science, administration, and technology. As a family-friendly institute, the AWI strives to be an attractive workplace for people from all over the world.
Our employees are our greatest asset. We know this and are fully aware of our responsibility.
Our goal:
To provide everyone with the best possible working conditions, an open and collegial work environment, and opportunities for lifelong learning.
New colleagues bring fresh perspectives. That’s why we truly welcome your feedback – let us know if there’s something we could do differently or better. We want our employees to enjoy coming to work and to collaborate in a spirit of trust. This is what motivates us as the Directorate.
To help you get started, the AWI Compass contains a wealth of useful information about the institute. We hope it helps you find your way quickly and feel at home. The links in the right-hand column provide key information that may be helpful even before your first day. The full AWI Compass – with all the details you’ll need for your first days and weeks – will be available once you have access to the AWI intranet.
We sincerely wish you a great start!
