IPCC AR7: Shaping the Future of Marine Carbon Dioxide Removal

Mar Fernández-Méndez, head of the Marine Algal Ecology and Applications working group at the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI), has been appointed as a Lead Author for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Seventh Assessment Report (AR7). The IPCC is the United Nations body for assessing the science related to climate change.

Within Working Group III (Mitigation of Climate Change), Mar is contributing her expertise to Chapter 15: Carbon Dioxide Removal, with a specific focus on marine Carbon Dioxide Removal (mCDR).

The inclusion of Carbon Dioxide Removal in the IPCC AR7 highlights its necessary role in global climate strategy. By collaborating with fellow co-authors and brilliant scientists worldwide, Mar's goal is to help set the scientific framework needed to scale CDR solutions in a responsible and sustainable manner.
