Munition in the Sea off Wangerooge

When: 10–11 April 2026
Where: National Park House Wangerooge
Who: German Maritime Museum (DSM)

What actually lies beneath the surface of the sea – and sometimes even right at our feet on the beach? This question is being explored by the event “Munition in the Sea off Wangerooge”, which takes place on 10 and 11 April 2026.

In cooperation with the National Park House Wangerooge and the Protestant Parish of Wangerooge, the German Maritime Museum (DSM) is organising a themed afternoon and an island walk to encourage discussion on this topic. In a lecture, researchers will present current findings and challenges relating to legacy munitions, followed by a panel discussion that brings together perspectives from science, policy and practice. It focuses on the impacts of munitions remnants in the North Sea and Baltic Sea on the environment and society, and on how such finds should be handled in the future.

Among the participants is Matthias Brenner from the Alfred Wegener Institute, who is involved in the REMARCO project, which examines the effects of munition residues in the marine environment.

The event is open to all interested parties. Admission is free.
