My research addresses the functioning of biological timing systems ("clocks") in marine organisms. In the oceans, animals are exposed to a complex interaction of different environmental cycles with different period lengths. I Investigate how marine invertebrates and their clocks adapt to these conditions on the molecular, physiological and behavioral level.
My main resaerch object is the copepod Calanus finmarchicus, a planktonic crustacean with a key position in the norther Atlantic food web. the copepod performs vertical migrations in the open ocean, and thereby actively shapes the environmental cycles its clock system has to function under.
