Permafrost data

Data from the Permafrost Research Section or on permafrost can be found in the following repositories and data portals:

Arctic Permafrost Geospatial Centre (APGC)

The Arctic Permafrost Geospatial Centre (APGC), developed and maintained by the Permafrost Research Section, offers direct access to selected open access geodata on permafrost, including detailed metadata descriptions and visualizations. This includes AWI data sets as well as data from external freely available data repositories.

Arctic Landscape EXplorer (ALEX)

The Arctic Landscape EXplorer (ALEX) presents change data derived from remote sensing analysis for permafrost regions throughout the Arctic. Interactive maps provide up-to-date information on land surface changes, hotspots of disturbance, and potential areas of active permafrost thaw and erosion. Using tailored visualizations and story maps as a means to more effectively communicate scientific observations of change, the tool is specifically addressing non-scientific user communities, stakeholders, and rights holders in the Arctic.

LTO Trendviewer

Our long-term observatories collect weather, soil and permafrost data at various measuring stations in Siberia (Lena river delta, Samoylov), Canada (Trail Valley Creek - TVC) and on Spitzbergen (Ny- Ålesund - Bayelva).
The TrendViewer shows the data series for the selected parameters at these locations and creates a regression line for the annual values to estimate a trend. Below that, the respective years are plotted in order to be able to identify any seasonal changes that may have occurred. In addition, some statistics and box plots are created. Several settings can be made in the left column. In addition to the selection of the station, dataset and measured variable, the observation period can be changed.

Global Terrestrial Network for Permafrost (GTN-P)

The website of the Global Terrestrial Network for Permafrost (GTN-P) provides a dynamic database containing data on borehole temperatures and thicknesses of the seasonal thaw layer from Arctic, Antarctic and mountain permafrost regions. The aim of GTN-P is to collect the data collected by many research groups in a uniform and standardised way and to provide global permafrost temperature data accordingly.

AWI's data center operates a data portal that provides information on devices and sensors, tracklines, field reports, peer-review publications, GIS products and data and data products archived in PANGAEA that originate from the AWI research platforms as an "all-in-one" solution. Permafrost-relevant data are also represented here.
