Research in Europe

Hans-Otto Pörtner now a member of the European Academy of Sciences

AWI biologist hopes to promote the networking of the sciences in Europe in his new position
[27. February 2020]

Prof Hans-Otto Pörtner, Co-Chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Working Group II and Head of the Integrative Ecophysiology Section at the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research in Bremerhaven, has been selected as a new member of the European Academy of Sciences (EurASc).

A non-profit, independent organisation based in Belgium, the Academy’s goal is to offer a collaborative platform for the most respected researchers in Europe, and by doing so, to promote interdisciplinary knowledge sharing and cooperation across disciplinary and national borders. In addition, its Expert Groups advise other European institutions on research-related questions.

“I look forward to supporting the further networking of the sciences in Europe as a member of the EurASc. In this regard, I hope to draw on my experience as Co-Chair at the IPCC and discuss sensible research contributions to address the global climate and biodiversity crisis,” said Hans-Otto Pörtner, when asked for his thoughts on being selected for membership.

No one can simply join the Academy; new members have to be nominated by established Academy members, and the nomination has to be approved by the General Board. According to the congratulatory letter the AWI expert received, Hans-Otto Pörtner’s nomination was “enthusiastically supported by all members of the General Board.” You can find further information on the EurASc at its official website.
