On 23 October, the New Zealand Ambassador Craig Hawke was a guest at the AWI. AWI Director Antje Boetius welcomed him to Bremerhaven in the morning. Afterwards, all participants exchanged ideas with each other and presented their scientific work.

The current political and social context raises the question of the future of academic mobility and the role of science. AWI Director and marine biologist Antje Boetius will join diplomat and journalist Ralf Beste and infectious disease specialist Beate Kampmann on a panel dedicated to this and related questions. It is part of the event "The future of academic mobility in a changing world" of the Einstein Foundation Berlin and will take place on 19 October. More information.
Parliamentary Breakfast on sea level rise

"Sea Level Rise - what does this imply for Germany?" - this was the title of a parliamentary breakfast organised by the Helmholtz Platform SynCom. Glaciologist Ingo Sangen represented the AWI and gave a presentation on the topic "Polar perspective on a global risk". A fact sheet with information on sea level rise is available online. Open Day at AWI-Helgoland: The Biological Institute Helgoland opened its doors to the public. The public and tourists took up the offer with great interest and informed themselves about the current research at the AWI Helgoland site. Hands-on science enthused young and old alike. Whether it was getting to know the animals and plants in Helgoland's waters, marveling at the beautiful black and white photos by Franz Schensky or learning more about the reintroduction of the European oyster.
Start of project: REMARCO EU

The multidisciplinary project REMARCO ("Remediation, Management, Monitoring and Cooperation addressing North Sea UXO") started on the 16th/17th of August with a kick-off meeting. 35 researchers from 10 partner institutions as well as advisors from ministries, authorities and administration met at the AWI in Bremerhaven. With the aim of protecting marine ecosystems, the AWI-led project deals, for example, with war wrecks and sea mines in the North Sea. It builds on the results of the "North Sea Wrecks" project.
