Scholarship holders finish their education

For ten months they have learnt standard methods of the marine science
[20. August 2015]

Today the graduates of the Nippon Foundation-POGO Centre of Excellence hosted by the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI) say goodbye to the AWI. During the past ten months the scholarship holders from different nations have learnt standard methods of the marine science to be able to use them in future in their homecountries.

The education is a scholarship of the Japanese Nippon foundation and the syndicate of the big oceanographer's research institutions, POGO (Partnership for observation of they Worldwide Oceans). With their common programme they want to strengthen the networked oceanographer's research.

The courses take place in the laboratories and on the ships of the AWI sites Helgoland and Sylt. All senior scientists of the AWI island sites take part in the education. They are supported by other AWI colleagues as well as external experts. The scholarship holders should now pass on the things they learnt in their homecountries. For this they will be supported by a network.

The fundamental idea of the progrmme is that we all depend on the ocean for food, transportation and recreation. All maritime nations should participate in knowledge-based governance of the ocean. Education in marine science is key to secure the oceans as a sustainable resource. The next training programme will start early October 2015.

In the gallery you get some impressions of the work and life of the scholarship holders at the AWI.
