Antje Boetius receives the Robert L. and Bettie P. Cody Award in Ocean Sciences

[30. July 2019] The Cody Award recognizes outstanding scientific achievement in oceanography, ocean biosciences, and earth science. It is presented by Scripps Institution of Oceanography to a scientist who has made significant contributions to his or her field of science specialty. Prof. Dr. Antje Boetius, Director of the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research, now receives the award. The Cody Award, presented biennially, consists of a gold medal and $10,000.

For Antje Boetius, it is something very special, to receive the Cody Award: “To me this is a fantastic honor, because I worked at Scripps from 1989-1990 and also in 1991 as a part-time research assistant, and used the other part to complete my graduate studies and to enjoy the excellent spirit of that famous institution in La Jolla. I enjoyed a fantastic education there and kept friendships for life, so this is a very special honor for me”

As part of the award ceremony, Antje Boetius will give a presentation on: "The Poles and Deep Seas: Protecting the Unknown Realms of Earth." In this presentation, the deep-sea researcher summarizes recent observations of change in polar and deep-sea ecosystems, and discusses strategies and rationales for including the unknown realms of Earth in sustainable development goals.
