South of the Equator – North of the Roaring Forties

We continue the voyage according to the plan. We received the result of the third smear test for CoV-2 that we sent from Las Palmas to Bremerhaven. They were all negative, Antarctica here we come! We will probably arrive within short time.
Civilization is moving farther and farther away, at least geographically. On January 10, we passed Tristan da Cunha, the most remote inhabited island in the world, at a distance of about 200 nautical miles.
For the time being we prepare the unloading of the ship, continue the scientific work, as well as the training of the overwinterers, the meetings and lectures. Everything is running as usual and well-rehearsed. Only the weather changes. It’s getting colder, clouds are gathering and within the next few days a low coming from the west will reach us. The next challenge will be the Roaring Forties, Furious Fifties and Screaming Sixties and it remains to be seen whether they live up to their name. To be on the safe side, we are reactivating the “sea legs” obtained in the Bay of Biscay.
