Highlights

  • “The Litter is a Whole New Dimension”

AWI biologist Lars Gutow shares insights into his expeditions to the North Sea and Sargasso Sea, where he investigated how marine litter is spreading

Now we have the perfect prescription

With the aid of our new ultra-wideband ice radar, AWI glaciologists can scan glaciers and ice sheets from top to bottom.  Angelika Humbert and Tobias Binder explain how this technology works

  • Ocean acidification - The evil twin of global warming

The increasing amount of carbon dioxide in the air alters the chemistry of the ocean. That has consequences for ocean dwellers and humans alike.

  • Permafrost - An Introduction

For decades, huge expanses of land at the higher latitudes, which sit atop frozen soil – referred to as permafrost – have been thawing. When the subterranean ice in the permafrost melts, massive quantities of greenhouse gases can be released into the atmosphere, intensifying global warming.

    What is a climate model?

and five further questions we have always wanted to ask a climate modeler. AWI expert Helge Gößling is answering

  • Life is thriving beneath the floes

The “underside” of sea ice in the Arctic and Antarctic is a unique habitat. AWI biologists investigate, how algae and animals manage to survive in the icy, dim world.

Infographics

Pathways of litter into the ocean

Plastic litter is present in large amounts in practically all the oceans. But where does all the litter come from, anyway? And how does it end up in the sea? This infographic shows the pathway of the litter into the world's oceans and the consequences that litter can have there

  • A warming Arctic

To understand the Arctic climate it is essential to monitor its changes over a long time: Our most important result of these long-term observations since 1993

  • In action on an ice flow

AWI sea ice physicists observe and investigate the sea ice cover in both hemisphere thoroughly. Which techniques and methods they are using in shown in this graph.

How the ocean‘s heat is threatening the Antarctic ice shelf

With the increasing warming in Antarctica the sea ice formation in the southern Weddell Sea will decrease – and thus the salt content of the cold water. What then happens is shown by our infographics

  • The new species in the Wadden Sea

There are now numerous plant and animal species living in the Wadden Sea that weren’t there 100 years ago. This AWI infographic shows which introduced species have now settled in the Wadden Sea and how they have changed the habitat

  • Heading for the new MOSAiC ice floe, Polarstern takes the shortest way to the area of interest: via the North Pole. On tghe way north, the sea ice is surprisingly weak, has lots of melt ponds, and Polarstern is able to easily break it.
