Bachelor Thesis Candidate Mareike Schmidt (2007)

Solid particle loads in sediment filters

This bachelor thesis deals with water treatment processes in recirculating aquaculture systems.

Nowadays, most conventional aquaculture systems are equipped with baffle plate thickeners. Normally, the dimension of the size of the filter will be determined by the candidate, the stocking density, the nutrient loads and many other parameters. Unfortunately, data necessary for an upscaling of the filter dimensions are limited.

In this thesis, the bachelor student investigates which fractions of feed nitrogen, phosphorus and carbon can be determined in the sediment collector of the water treatment module to provide a first step in this data defizit. Furthermore, economic considerations will be calculated which include dimensional upscaling of this treatment step under rising stocking densities, aiming to replace expensive drum filters by baffle plate thickeners.
