Oxygen shortage

Due to climate change the oceans are not just getting warmer and their waters more acidic - there is also an increase in those regions, which lack or are depleted of oxygen. In these zones animal life, as we know it, is -except for few exemptions - scarcely possible. Learn here what causes this oxygen shortage, which role humans play and how AWI scientists investigate this aftereffect of climate change.

Ocean acidification – the evil twin of climate warming

Around half of the carbon dioxide volume discharged into the atmosphere through exhaust pipes and chimney stacks over the past two hundred years has been absorbed by the oceans - but not without consequence. The carbon dioxide dissolves in the water, creating carbonic acid. This reduces the pH value of the seawater and makes the oceans more acidic. You will learn here about the consequences this has on the inhabitants of the oceans and on humans and how scientists of the Alfred Wegener Institute are researching this subject area.

Interview: Permafrost at Easter – has climate change taken a break?

March 2013. Facing the cold weather for several weeks, some people might have doubts about whether the rise in temperature alleged by scientists is really a problem to be taken seriously. In an interview Professor Dr Peter Lemke, Head of the AWI Climate Sciences Division, explains why the long winter is not a sign of an end to global warming. Read the interview here.
