Courses and trainings at AWI Center for Scientific Diving
The AWI Center for Scientific Diving at the Biological Institute Helgoland is one of seven German certified education centers für scientific diving. The following three courses are offer on an annual basis:
- Certified research diver (Geprüfter Forschungstaucher) / European Scientific Diver (ESD)
- Supervisor for Scientific Diving (TEL / AESD)
- Safety Days
Additional courses on special topics like „Surface Supplied Scientific Diving“ and „Nitrox“ are organized upon request.
In Germany, the qualification "Certified research diver / European Scientific Diver" is required by law to dive for scientific purpose (incl. PhD-, Master-, Bacelor- or other university related activities). The course offers a professional dive training including scientific methods and safety procedures for underwater work according tot he national rules for scientific diving BGR/GUV – R 2112. The course concludes with a two-day practical and theoretical examination by the German certification commission for scientific divers. The qualification „Supervisor for Scientific Diving“ (Taucheinsatzleiter) is required in Germany to be in charge of a scientific dive mission. It requires extensive experience in scientific diving procedures (incl. 60 hours of diving at work), diving related safety procedures and team management skills. Supervisors for Scientific Diving have to be appointed by the respective employer and shall be officially certified by the German Commission for Scientific Diving (KFT).
