PhD Thesis Candidate Bernadette Pogoda (since 2004)

The suitability of the area around the planned offshore wind farm Nordergründe for the cultivation of Pacific and European Oysters: growth rates, fitness and health condition

This PhD Thesis is part of the Offshore Oyster Physiology Project and is financed by the University of Bremen (Marine Zoology Group) and the AWI in Bremerhaven (Marine Aquaculture Group). The main focus is based on the examination of culture potential and response of the Pacific Oyster (Crassostrea gigas) under offshore conditions. Seed oysters are cultivated in shellfish lanterns in an offshore located testing area Nordergründe. Growth rates, fitness indicators and health condition of the candidate species are determined regularly. An important aim of this project is to inform all interested parties (farmers, authorities, companies) about the best conditions for cultivating oysters within the planned offshore wind farms. These data are also used to prepare a catalogue for offshore site selection criteria.
