PhD Thesis Candidate Matthias Brenner (since 2005)

The suitability of the area around the planed offshore wind farm Nordergründe for the cultivation of blue mussels: fitness, parasite loads and selection criteria for artificial substrates

Figure shows Matthias Brenner diving for research.

In this project called MytiFit financed by the Ministry for Construction, Environment and Transport of Bremen (Germany) and the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research in Bremerhaven (Germany) I am examining the culture potential and the response of the blue mussel (Mytilus edulis) under offshore conditions. The focus of this project will be the overall health of the candidate, regarding the loads of micro- and macro parasites, shell-stability and attachment strength of mussels using different artificial substrates. The aim of this project is to inform all interested parties about best conditions for cultivating mussels within the planed offshore wind farms.
