Multi Corer

The multi corer comprises of an array of up to 12 transparent polycarbonate core tubes with a diameter of c. 6 or 10 cm that are fixed to core holders and the coring head with double lock-clamps. The coring head is attached with a cardanic suspension to a rack consisting of inclined legs that are held together by horizontal steel bars. This enables vertical penetration of the sample tube into the sediment. The coring head is hydraulically damped to ensure undisturbed samples. Penetration into sediment is controlled by detachable lead weights at the top of the coring head. If required, a video camera and light sources may be attached.

When the rack is lowered to the sea floor, the core head is pushed by hydrostatic pressure slowly into the sediment. When the sampling is completed, spring-loaded lids are pressed onto the tube at the top and bottom as soon as a safety mechanism is released. Both lids secure the sample and prevent disturbance . When dismantled the core tubes are closed at the bottom by rubber stoppers.

This corer is used to collect multiple undisturbed sediment samples including the sediment-water interface and overlying supernatant water, and sediment pore water at a high quality.
