Seismic land stations

To record seismic waves of earthquakes, icequakes or artificial seismic sources in polar regions, AWI owns a set of specially equipped seismic stations that are autonomous for several weeks and cold-proof. The stations consist of compact broadband seismometers or short-period geophone chains, a datalogger with low power consumption and a GPS antenna. Apart from solar panels special batteries supply power. These batteries are non-spillable and non-dangerous such that they can be transported along with the other equipment in a helicopter. For deployments on drifting sea ice our seismic stations can be tracked with Argos transponders such that we know their position anytime and easily find the stations again.
