The Research Unit Potsdam started operating in 1992. Its main fields of research are terrestrial geoscience in the periglacial regions (at the margins of inland ice sheets and in permafrost areas), as well as experimental investigations and modelling of atmospheric processes in the polar regions. These studies complement the predominantly marine programme of the Alfred Wegener Institute in Bremerhaven. In particular, polar researchers at Potsdam concentrate on the Arctic - a region key to understanding the climate in Europe.

The analysis of atmosphere, soils and rocks provides information about natural changes of the climate, facilitating our understanding of both short-term and long-term climate change. The polar regions with their immense ice caps, vast sea ice areas, and terrestrial permafrost regions are particularly sensitive to atmospheric alterations. Researchers at the Research Unit Potsdam are reconstructing the natural climate history by means of climate archives such as terrestrial sediments. Thus, it becomes possible to determine the time and significance of humans’ first influence on climate, and to predict the impacts of future interventions into the system. More about the Research Unit Potsdam

The Research Unit is part of the science campus ‘Albert Einstein’, located at the historic Telegrafenberg in Potsdam. In addition, the following institutes, close cooperation partners on climate research, are also located at Telegrafenberg:
