How to find the Alfred Wegener Institute in Bremerhaven
Bremerhaven is situated in North-western Germany, north of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen. You can reach Bremerhaven easily via Bremen or Hamburg by local and long-distance trains and by car.
Arrival by train
Trains of the Deutsche Bahn and the Elbe-Weser-Bahn ply regularly from Bremen and Hamburg to Bremerhaven. At the central station Bremerhaven, use bus lines 502, 505, 506, 508 or 509 and exit at the bus stop “Hochschule Bremerhaven”. The trip takes three to five minutes. From here, it only takes a few minutes to the different buildings of the institute.
Arrival by car
You can reach Bremerhaven by car on the Federal autobahn A27 which leads from Bremen to Bremerhaven. Please take exit number 7 “Bremerhaven-Mitte” to reach the different locations of the Alfred Wegener Institute.
How to get from Bremen to Bremerhaven?
From Bremen Airport, the easiest (and most expensive) is to take a taxi, approx. 110 €.
From Bremen airport, take a tram to Bremen Central Station (Bremen main station, Hauptbahnhof, Hbf). The tram (No 6) starts right at Bremen airport and brings you to the Central Station (Bremen Hauptbahnhof, Hbf). There is a tram at least every 20 minutes (Sundays at 08, 28, 48), until 22:28; Late trams run every day at 22:44, 23:14; last tram at 23:44. It takes 16 minutes to the Central Station.
From Bremen Central Station take a train to Bremerhaven (Bremerhaven Hauptbahnhof). This is one stop before the final destination Bremerhaven-Lehe. There is about one train every hour.
In Bremerhaven use bus lines 502, 505, 506, 508 or 509 and exit at the bus stop “Hochschule Bremerhaven”. The trip takes three to five minutes. From here, it only takes a few minutes to the different buildings of the institute. Tram, train and bus cooperate in the VBN.

Bus, tram and train are all available on a single ticket. From Bremen airport to Bremerhaven you need a ticket category H (Preisstufe H) for 11.65€. You can buy this ticket on a ticket machine with coins or small (5, 10 or 20€) bills. There are vending machines in the arrival hall of the airport and at the tram stop, just outside the airport building. The machines will return change. The ticket includes any bus transport within Bremerhaven.
