Aerodynamic

Numerous studies were necessary to determine the load-bearing capacity of the snow and, accordingly, the optimal foundation size for a building of approximately 2,300 tonnes. The statics of the building are designed to absorb shear forces associated with ice flow and potential wind stresses.

The most advantageous aerodynamic shape of the exterior casing of the station was established through a series of wind channel investigations. The overall shape of the building, together with the garage cover, is designed to reduce snow deposits near the building to a minimum. Hence, the life span of the station depends primarily on ice flow, giving a realistic estimate of 25 to 30 years operation time.
