Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE)

To transfer the findings from our basic biomechanical research into technology, we apply different engineering techniques. In particular, the combination of an integrative approach of design, calculation and optimization with biomimetic principles allows us to develop efficient and multifunctional lightweight solutions.

For the realization of such innovative lightweight solutions and structures, an equally innovative software is required: Synera (formerly ELISE). With the help of the Synera software, whose first version was developed in our research unit and which is now part of the spin-off company Synera Gmbh we can realize our approach of generative engineering for the creation of biomimetic designs. Parametric CAD designs allow a bidirectional data exchange with FE and optimization programs and thus a targeted design of components according to given requirements. Characteristics of this design process by means of optimization strategies is the highly efficient generation of load-compliant designs with homogeneous stress distribution. The integration of functions such as vibration optimization, robustness and crash are the focus of current and future research projects.

In order to exploit and realize the potential of bio-inspired structures, principles and designs, it is sometimes necessary to have more flexibility or additional functions that common software applications do not currently offer. For this reason, we also develop our own software solutions, e.g. in the form of extensions or new components for the Synera software. In this way, findings from basic biological research are transferred to technology and made usable.

Besides the innovative "Generative Engineering" with the help of the Synera software we also use conventional engineering techniques. For CAD design we have SolidWorks, CATIA and Rhinoceros at our disposal. Static and dynamic FEM calculations and optimizations are done with HyperWorks.
