Solar storm measured at Neumayer

[03. November 2003]

Disturbance in the Magnetic Field

The great geomagnetic storm from 29 Octobre 2003 encountered the Magnetometers on Neumayer-Base/Antarctica at 06:12 am. During 42 minutes the Totalintensity of the Earthmagneticfield decreased from 39144 nT to 35733 nT at 06:54 am. The highest value of the Totalintensity with 40109 nT was reached few hour later at the same day on 09:17 am. The strong solaractivity still disturbs the Earthmagneticfield around Neumayer Base, and one day after arrival of the Solar Particalstream the Magnetograms shows on 30 Octobre 2003 at 08:00 am a powerful oscillation, that lasts approximaley 40 minutes. The Pulsation had a period of 10 minutes and was observered both on horizontal- and vertikalkomponents of the Earthmagneticfield. This is reported by Bettina Bayer and Carl Dietrich Lange, scientist at Neumayer Station in Antarctica.

The Institute

The Alfred Wegener Institute pursues research in the polar regions and the oceans of mid and high latitudes. As one of the 18 centres of the Helmholtz Association it coordinates polar research in Germany and provides ships like the research icebreaker Polarstern and stations for the international scientific community.
