MOSAiC team leaders receive award

IASC Award for Service 2024
[28. March 2024]  The International Arctic Science Committee (IASC) has honored Markus Rex, Matthew Shupe and Klaus Dethloff with the Award for Service 2024. They received the award for the planning and execution of the MOSAiC expedition, which provided crucial insights into Arctic systems and a better understanding of climate change. According to the IASC, their work is unparalleled in its contribution to Arctic science and international cooperation.

Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson visits Potsdam

[12. March 2024]  Yesterday, the Chairman of the Arctic Circle, Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson, visited the Arctic Office at the AWI site in Potsdam. He first visited the Radialsystem in Berlin and then met with staff of the Arctic Office to discuss the Arctic Circle Forum, which will take place on 7-8 May. Representatives of the German Foreign Office also attended the meeting.

Start of the EU project POMP

[01. March 2024]  "Polar Ocean Mitigation Potential" (POMP) is a new EU project involving 16 partners, including the AWI. The aim of the research project is to investigate the effects of climate change on polar biodiversity and the CO2 absorption capacity of ecosystems in polar regions. The kick-off meeting took place from 27 to 29 February 2024 in Copenhagen to discuss future steps and to organise the workflows. The project is led by Aarhus University in Denmark and funded by the EU Horizon Programme. German-Monegasque Scientific Collaboration

Polar Symposium - From Arctic to Antarctic
[22. February 2024]  The Institut Océanographique de Monaco and the Centre Scientifique de Monaco have each signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the AWI to promote cooperation in polar and marine research. AWI Director Antje Boetius signed the agreements today in Monaco. The aim is to promote common interests in environmental and earth system research. Through cooperation in research, logistics and scientific events, both institutions aim to make the best use of their resources.

Neumayer descendants visit the AWI

[02. February 2024]  AWI archivist Dr. Christian Salewski had a special encounter this week: Camilla-Louise Past and Julius-Alexander Past, the great-great-great-niece and great-great-great-nephew of Georg von Neumayer, the German polar explorer and namesake of the Neumayer III Antarctic station, visited the AWI Bremerhaven. They brought with them a documentary legacy, including a large-format portrait of Georg von Neumayer and a draft of a poem "Lob der Mathematik" from around 1847. The documents will now become part of the holdings of the Archive for German Polar Research.
