The Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) and the Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg (HWK) jointly offer a fellowship for artists within the "Expedition Science and Art".
With this cooperation, the institutions want to promote the dialogue between science and art. The AWI enables artists to participate in expeditions or to visit the various research stations. In this way artists can engage intensively with the research of the AWI, both in the extreme polar regions as well as the North Sea. Within the project „Art in Progress”, the HWK invites the fellows as „Artist in Residence“ to bring the combination of art and science to life within the context of personal exchange.
The fellowship "Expedition Science and Art" will take nine months.
In December 2013 Rolf Giegold participated in an AWI expedtion to the German Neumayer Station III (Ekström Ice Shelf, Antarctica) during his six-month fellowship "Expedition Art and Science" at the Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg (HWK). The Berlin concept artist turned his attention to the living and working space of the over-wintering team. He characterizes this space against the backdrop of a seemingly infinite, hostile landscape.
During his fellowship he created a large-scale video projection and nine photographs.
