Rules of Good Scientific Practice

A resolution adopted by the General Assembly on 17 June 1998 specifies that recipients of DFG (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft - German Research Foundation) funds must observe set guidelines on safeguarding good scientific practice.

Universities and other research institutes wishing to apply for DFG funding must establish rules to safeguard good scientific practice at their institutions in accordance with recommendations 1 to 8 of the guidelines.

Ombudsman

The ombudsman of the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) ensures good scientific practice at the AWI in accordance with the recommendations formulated by the German Research Foundation (DFG). The ombudsman is available to all scientists directly and independently for advice and support in questions of good scientific practice and its infringement by scientific improbity.

This applies irrespective of a reference to the DFG and the projects it supports. All matters submitted are treated in the strictest confidence in principle and after completion of a case. Individuals or institutions not directly concerned are not notified by the ombudsman.

The ombudsman of the AWI is composed of Professor Andreas Mackensen as person of confidence and Professor Maarten Boersma as deputy person of confidence.
