SAFIRE, Store Glacier, Uummannaq Fjord

July 2014

As part of a larger glaciological survey at Store Glacier, a large tide water glacier Uummannaq fjord, we collected a 2 km and 1.5 km continuous profile line 30 km upstream from the calving front. The area we could work in was limited by crevasse zones. This area was characterized by water filled crevasses, moulins and drainage channels. It was inaccessible for a snow mobile so we man hauled a 300 m, 96 channel snow streamer.  As source we used 400 g dynamite cartridges drilled in 2 m deep boreholes. Our purpose was to characterize the sub-glacial conditions.

We collected:

  • 2 km 2-fold profile line parallel to the ice flow, 26 shots, shot interval 75 m
  • 1.5 km 2-fold profile line crossline, 20 shots, shot interval 75 m
  • Amplitude versus Offset (AVO) data, 6 shots, offset range 10-1800 m
