In the ice-covered Arctic Ocean we also use seismic land stations deployed on drifting ice floes to record small earthquakes. We optimized this method and attained remarkable results. Recording durations of several weeks are possible. We get information on the earthquake and volcano activity of remote regions such as the 85°E volcano at Gakkel Ridge which was active from 1999 to at least 2001. Apart from earthquake signals, the sea ice itself produces a rich variety of seismic signals that reflect the ice motion.
