Bayelva Climate & Soil Station

Bayelva Station with Scheteligfjellet

Bayelva Station with Scheteligfjellet

Since 1998, we've maintained a climate and soil station close to the town Ny-Ålesund next to the Bayelva River. The power supply of these stand-alone systems consists of a combination of wind generator, solar panel and batteries. Data is stored on storage modules and collected every 6 weeks by the stationl eader of the Koldewey Station.

Components of the soil station include:

  • Snow depth sensor
  • 32 temperature and 35 soil moisture probes in different vertical profiles

The climate station consists of sensors for:

  • Windspeed/-direction
  • Air temperature/-humidity
  • Radiation (global, IR, net)
  • Precipitation

Automatic camera

Additionally, we've installed an automatic camera in September 2006 that takes one picture per day to observe the snow cover at our site. The time period in this animation is 27.09-18.10.2006.
