Upward-looking radar
Transient processes in snow can be observed with upward-looking radar of the same sample volume over a complete season and allow for deduction of physical properties. Apart from scientific interest, application to evaluation of snow stability (avalanches) is currently investigated in the independent project MUSI, which was kicked-off in October 2010.
The picture shows two-month evolution of snowpack stratigraphy imaged with upward-looking GPR (top, black line = surface) and comparison with snow-pit data (hardness and density).
