GITEWS - Tsunami Modelling at AWI

TsunAWI simulation snapshot of the sea surface elevation [m] in the Indian Ocean two hours after the earthquake on 26 December 2004
The tsunami modelling group at AWI was founded as part of the German Indonesian Tsunami Early Warning System (GITEWS) development project and provides a modern modelling component to the early warning system installed in Indonesia.

Maximum wave height [m] on the global scale in a simulation of the boxing day tsunami 2004
The complete system comprises data sensors of different kinds (remote sensing, GPS based, seismic sensors, bottom pressure sensors, etc.), a modelling component to predict wave height, inundation and arrival times from measured tsunami wave data, a decision support system, including GIS tools for rapid risk assessment.
