The geoscientific development of selected coastal areas
In the frame of CO1 geoscientific studies of the Wadden Sea Research Station include extended monitoring efforts and analyses of selected coastal areas. Data acquisition is based on air- and shipborne optical and acoustic remote-sensing techniques. In addition, samples are collected in systematic intervals from hundreds of locations within the supra-, eu-, and sublitoral to monitor the energetic state of the area via grain-size distributions. The development and recent changes of selected coastal areas are also analyzed using ground-penetrating radar, sediment cores, and seismic methods.

The figure shows part of a monitoring area between Westerland and the northern tip of Rømø. Data shown include the mean grain size and the skewness of the grain-size frequency distributions.
