Sources of Iron in the Southern Ocean

We use various tracers to quantify the role of different sources for iron to the surface waters of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current. 228Ra, produced by sediments and released into bottom waters, is used to trace inputs from shelf sediments. Concentrations of Al, Rare Earth Elements and 232Th of suspended particles collected from surface waters is used to detect aeolian inputs, and their neodymium isotope record bears informations about the origin of the aeolian material.
